Word Counter — Free Online Character, Sentence & Paragraph Counter. Free online word counter and character counter.
Count words, characters, letters, sentences and paragraphs in real time, set a word goal, check social media character limits and estimate pages — 100% private, in your browser.
Our free word counter shows your word count, character count (with and without spaces), letter count, sentences, paragraphs, lines and unique words instantly as you type or paste.
Use it as a word count checker for essays, cover letters, blog posts and assignments, as a sentence counter to keep your writing tight, or as a paragraph counter to check the structure of long-form content.
Emoji and accented characters are counted as single characters, and punctuation on its own is never counted as a word, so the numbers match what editors and submission forms expect.
Hitting a target is easier with the built-in word goal: set how many words you need and a progress bar tells you how many are left.
The character counter also checks your text against common limits — X (Twitter) posts, SEO title tags, meta descriptions, SMS, Instagram captions and LinkedIn posts — and the words to pages estimate converts your word count into single- and double-spaced pages.
Reading and speaking time help you plan speeches, podcasts and video scripts. Need keyword density or a full word frequency list? Use our Word Frequency Counter. For byte size, line counts and a readability score, open the Text Analyzer.
Everything runs locally in your browser: your essays, drafts and confidential documents are never uploaded, stored or logged. Load the sample text to try it, copy a full word count report with one click, or share a link that restores your text and word goal.
When your draft is ready, clean it up with the Text Formatter or compare revisions with Text Diff.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count words and characters in my text?
Type or paste into Enter or Paste your text. Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update instantly, and Detailed Statistics adds characters without spaces, letters, lines, unique words and average words per sentence. Click Copy report to copy all the numbers.
How does the word counter count words and sentences?
A word is any run of characters between spaces that contains at least one letter or digit, so stray dashes or dots are not counted. Sentences end with a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis, and paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
How long will it take to read or say my text?
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, which is useful for speeches and presentations. Page estimates use 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 words per double-spaced page.
Can I set a word count goal for an essay?
Yes. Enter a target in the Word count goal field, for example 500. A progress bar shows how many words are left and tells you when the goal is reached.
Does it check social media and SEO character limits?
Yes. The Character limits table compares your character count with an X (Twitter) post (280), SEO title tag (60), meta description (160), SMS message (160), Instagram caption (2,200) and LinkedIn post (3,000), and shows what remains or how far over you are.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser; your text is not uploaded or stored, so it is gone when you close or reload the page.
