How do I convert text to Unicode code points?

Select Code point under Output format and type your text into the Text to Unicode box. Each character is shown as U+ followed by its hex value, separated by spaces, so Hi becomes U+0048 U+0069. Click Copy unicode to clipboard to copy the result.

Which Unicode formats are supported?

How do I decode Unicode escapes back to text?

Paste the encoded text into Enter unicode to convert to text. The decoder recognises HTML decimal and hex entities, U+ code points, backslash-u escapes with or without braces, Python backslash-U escapes, CSS escapes and space- or comma-separated decimal numbers, even when mixed with normal text.

What does Keep ASCII letters and symbols do?

When ticked, printable ASCII characters (letters, digits, spaces and basic punctuation) stay as they are and only other characters, such as accented letters, symbols and emoji, are escaped. It is not available for the Code point and Decimal formats, which always encode every character.

What does the Character details table show?

For each character of your input it lists the character, its code point, decimal value, UTF-8 bytes in hex and HTML decimal entity, for up to the first 200 characters. It is handy for spotting invisible characters or checking how an emoji is encoded.

Why does an emoji become two escapes in JavaScript format?

JavaScript and JSON strings store text as UTF-16, so characters above U+FFFF, including most emoji, are written as a surrogate pair of two backslash-u escapes. Choose ES6, Python, HTML or Code point if you want one escape per emoji.
