Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an IBAN is valid?
Paste the IBAN into the input; spaces and dashes are removed and letters are uppercased automatically. The result card shows Is IBAN valid?, lists any IBAN errors, and displays the country code, the BBAN and the IBAN in groups of four.
What does the IBAN validator check?
It checks the country code, the length and character format of the BBAN for that country, and the two IBAN check digits (the mod-97 checksum), plus national bank or branch check digits for countries that define them. It uses the open-source ibantools library.
Does a valid IBAN mean the bank account exists?
No. Validation only proves the IBAN is well formed and its check digits are correct, which catches most typing mistakes. It cannot confirm that the account exists, is open or belongs to a particular person; only the bank can verify that.
What is the IBAN number format?
An IBAN starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by the BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) holding the bank and account details. The length depends on the country, for example 22 characters for Germany (DE89370400440532013000) and 27 for France.
What is a QR-IBAN?
A QR-IBAN is a special IBAN used with Swiss and Liechtenstein QR-bills; its bank identifier (QR-IID) lies between 30000 and 31999. The Is IBAN a QR-IBAN? line tells you whether the IBAN you entered is one.
What do the IBAN errors mean?
Wrong IBAN checksum usually means a mistyped or swapped character; Wrong BBAN length or Wrong BBAN format means characters are missing, extra or of the wrong type for that country; No IBAN country means the first two letters are not a supported country code.
