Question 1

How do I calculate a percent off discount?

Accepted Answer

Choose Percent off, enter the Original price and the Discount (% off), or click a quick discount such as 20% or 50%. The results show the Price after discount, You save and the Final price; enter a Sales tax (%) to include tax.

Question 2

How are two stacked discounts calculated?

Accepted Answer

The Extra discount is applied to the already reduced price, not added to the first percentage. For example, 20% off and then an extra 10% off a price of 100 gives 72, a total discount of 28% rather than 30%. The Total discount card shows the combined percentage.

Question 3

How do I find what percentage was taken off?

Accepted Answer

Switch to Find % off, enter the Original price and the Sale price, and the Discount percentage is shown along with the amount you save. The sale price cannot be higher than the original price.

Question 4

How do I work out the original price before a discount?

Accepted Answer

Choose Find original price, enter the Sale price and the Discount (% off). The tool divides the sale price by one minus the discount, so 60 at 25% off means an original price of 80. The discount must be below 100%.

Question 5

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

Accepted Answer

After. Tax is calculated on the discounted price, the way most shops charge it, and then added to give the Final price. Sales tax is available in the Percent off and Amount off modes.

Question 6

Can I use a fixed amount off instead of a percentage?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Choose Amount off and enter the discount as a money amount, such as 15. The price never goes below zero, and the results still show the equivalent Total discount percentage and the final price with tax.
