Frequently asked questions
How do I create a cron expression with this tool?
Click a Quick Presets button such as Every hour or Daily 2am, or type the five fields (minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week) into the input. A plain-English description of the schedule appears underneath, and an error is shown if the syntax is not valid.
What does */5 * * * * mean in cron?
The slash is a step value, so */5 in the minute field means every 5 minutes, and the four asterisks mean any hour, day, month and weekday. A hyphen defines a range (1-10) and a comma a list (1,10). The cheat sheet under the input shows each symbol with an example.
Can I add a seconds field or use month and day names?
Yes. An optional sixth field for seconds can be placed at the start, for example 0 */5 * * * * for every 5 minutes at second 0. Month and weekday names such as jan or mon are accepted. Day-of-week numbers run from 0 to 7, where both 0 and 7 mean Sunday, as in most Linux crontabs. Many system crontabs do not support seconds.
What do the Verbose, 24 hour and Days start at 0 switches do?
They only change the English description, not the expression. Verbose adds more detail, Use 24 hour time format shows 14:00 instead of 2:00 PM, and Days start at 0 controls whether day-of-week numbers are read with 0 as Sunday (on) or 1 as Sunday (off).
Where do I use the cron expression once it is ready?
On Linux or macOS, run crontab -e and add a line with the expression followed by the command, for example 0 2 * * * /path/to/backup.sh. This tool only builds and checks the expression; it does not schedule or run any job.
Are shortcut macros such as weekly or daily supported?
Yes. Type the macro with its leading at sign: yearly and annually (0 0 1 1 *), monthly (0 0 1 * *), weekly (0 0 * * 0), daily and midnight (0 0 * * *) and hourly (0 * * * *) are described along with the five-field expression they stand for. The reboot macro is accepted too, but it runs once at startup and has no schedule.
